Found this via UH Business IP Forum on TechHui

Time: July 31, 2008 at 6pm
Location: Manoa Innovation Center (Website), 2nd Floor Large Conference Room
Street: 2800 Woodlawn Drive Honolulu, HI (Map
Contact Info: +1 (808) 429-6600
Event Type: Forum
Organized By: Sam Joseph, Daniel Leuck & Yuka Nagashima

The UH Business IP Forum is intended as an opportunity for University of Hawaii researchers to present their latest ideas to the local business community. University of Hawaii researchers regularly generate intellectual property in the form of patents. The University of Hawaii can provide exclusive rights to these patents, licensing them to individual business or consortia for the purpose of generating revenue. In the first instance the forum will start with presentations from UH researchers from the Ubiquitous Wireless Computing research group from the department of Information and Computer Sciences. The presentations will generally be short in order to allow plenty of time for discussion. As well as getting feedback on the potential licensability of existing patents, UH researchers will be looking for input from the business community on what technologies and techniques could be developed for the mutual benefit of both academia and business.

The UH Business IP Forum is lead by Sam Joseph. Sam is the project lead for the Ubiquitous and Wireless Computing project in the Laboratory for Interactive Learning Technologies in the University of Hawaii Department of Information and Computer Sciences. He has brought in over $3,000,000 in industry grants over the last year and now runs a team of 10 researchers developing new IP in the fields of Ubiquitous and Wireless Computing.

Sam’s academic qualifications include a B.Sc. (Hons) in astrophysics from the University of Leicester, UK, a M.Sc. in cognitive science and natural language and a Ph.D. in neural networks from the University of Edinburgh, UK. He was also recipient of the Raymond-Hide prize for Astrophysics and a Toshiba Fellowship.

Sam spent six years in Japan, first working on intelligent agents at the Toshiba Research & Development Center, then freelancing for startup companies, and finally on peer-to-peer systems at the University of Tokyo.

Dinner and a Movie with Tech Oahu - June 17th, 2008
Tuesday June 17th, 2008
6:00 PM

Oceanit (Map - Parking is $2 after 4 p.m.)
828 Fort Street Mall
Honolulu, Hawaii 96813-4321

Come hang out for Dinner & a Movie with Tech Oahu at 6 p.m. on Tuesday June 17, 2008 at Oceanit.

We’ll be watching two great presentations discussing usability and user feedback and have time after them to eat and discuss.

A great big thanks to Ian Kitajima (@ikitajima) and Oceanit for hosting us. Please RSVP to ssavara [at] hotmail [dot] com to help us plan.

Our tech-centric presentation for this instance is by Paul Buchheit, founder of FriendFeed and creator of GMail, discussing how to listen to your users (video from Startup School 08). In his talk, Paul talks about some of the challenges in getting accurate user feedback, how to parse user feedback, and how to build a successful web application by focusing on features users want.

We’ll pair this with a non tech video from TED, where Malcolm Gladwell gets inside the food industry’s pursuit of the perfect spaghetti sauce. It’s a fascinating story about parsing user feedback from surveys and the story of Ragu versus Prego, and the different way they approached targeting customers.

There will be plenty of time following the presentations to eat, hang out, and discuss the presentations or other tech subjects and/or usability concerns. Feel free to invite a friend and we looking forward to seeing you there!

Bring $5 if you want pizza; drinks are free!

Will Turmoil in the Public Markets Hit the Venture Capital World?

New Challenges Face Entrepreneurs and Investors

Elliot Parks, CEO of Hawaii Biotech and former venture capitalist with Ventana Capital, a 24 year old venture capital firm with global reach, will address members and guests of the Hawaii Venture Capital Association at its March 27, 2008 monthly luncheon meeting at the Plaza Club. With every passing day, the turmoil in the public markets caused by the mortgage crisis and instability of the US dollar touches us in many ways. Venture capital is traditionally insulated from the twists and turns in the stock market, however, today that insulation may be wearing thin. Elliott Parks, whose career spans many years in the private equity market will talk about the about the current cash flow situation within venture capital firms and address some of the challenges for venture capital portfolio companies. He will also speculate the impact of the current financial climate on the flow of capital into venture firms planning to raise another fund in 2008.

One situation, according to a MarketWatch report by Scott Austin, is the failure of “auction-rate securities” which are debt instruments that corporations and wealthy individuals invest. This situation may severely impact venture investing and venture capital portfolio companies. These securities, which comprise a $330 billion market, bear floating interest rates that reset in auctions every week or so. An estimated $60 billion of such debt failed to generate enough demand from bidders at a recent auction and the interest rates soared. This unprecedented occurrence prevented many holders of auction-rate securities from getting their cash back, according to the report. In addition to tying up cash available to venture capital firms, many start-ups who have parked their cash in these instruments may face lengthy delays in accessing their cash that could hinder operations.

“Investors and entrepreneurs need to be sensitive to big picture issues such as these that could severely impact operations and future investment,” said Bill Spencer, HVCA President. “We are lucky to have experienced observers like Elliot Parks in our community who can educate us about these challenges.”

The Hawaii Venture Capital Association, founded in 1988, is one of Hawaii’s oldest private non-profit economic development organizations devoted to entrepreneurship and capital formation.
