Truman Leung on TechHui just contacted me regarding this Jelly Coworking Group Event on TechHui

Time: July 16, 2008 from 8am to 12pm
Location: Tropical Smoothie Cafe (Map
Organized By: Truman Leung

We had a great meeting a couple days ago. I got to meet Sid, currently doing software development for a mainland company remotely while living here in town. It was also great to spend time with TechHui founders, Dan and Mika Leuck. Thanks so much for creating TechHui. It’s been a wonderful resource.

Hope you can make the next Coworking group. I’m adding the name “Jelly” to the group. It seems that the term “coworking” can range from a situation as formal as dedicated office space where you can rent a desk to an informal gathering of independents to work together at a cafe. However, a Jelly seems definitely a more on the casual end of the spectrum. So I’ll add the name “Jelly” to our group so people can understand at a glance that this is a group where you can drop in whenever you like and not have to pay for a desk.

If you can make it to our next meeting, please add a comment about what you’ll be working on while at the Jelly.

Thanks again to Teddy Wells, owner of the Tropical Smoothie Cafe here in Honolulu, for hosting the group and providing free wifi internet access.

Just saw this posted to Coworking Group July 8, 2008 on TechHui

Time: July 8, 2008 from 8am to 12pm
Location: Tropical Smoothie Cafe (Map)

Trying out a new place this time: Tropical Smoothie Cafe. I think its the perfect place for a coworking group:

1. It’s conveniently located in town: It’s just across Piikoi Street from Sears Ala Moana in the Hawaiki Tower.

2. Lots of padded seating (it’s not crowded).

3. Ample conveniently located electrical outlets to keep your laptops powered up.

4. Coffee/Food to keep yourself powered up. I think the Acai smoothie there tastes better than Jamba Juice. Plus the chipotle chicken sandwich rocks. We can stay there and have breakfast and/or lunch.

5. Internet. I’ve arranged for wifi access during the time of our weekly co-working meeting thanks to the owner, Teddy Wells.

6. Free parking. There are a bunch of stalls in the parking garage. Entrance to the parking garage is on Piikoi St. Just after you enter the garage, on the left hand side there are marked stalls reserved for customers of the Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

7. It’s spacious, air-conditioned and bathrooms are just down the hall.

Hope you can make it!

Benefits of coworking:

* get out of the house to focus on work
* network with other people in your field(s)
* cross-pollination of ideas and new tech
* collaborate

Found via UH Business IP Forum Event on TechHui

Time: June 24, 2008 from 6pm to 8pm
Location: Manoa Innovation Center, 2nd Floor Large Conference Room (Manoa Innovation Website, Google Map)
Street: 2800 Woodlawn Drive
City/Town: Honolulu, HI
Contact Info: +1 (808) 429-6600
Event Type: Forum
Organized By: San Joseph & Daniel Leuck

The UH Business IP Forum is intended as an opportunity for University of Hawaii researchers to present their latest ideas to the local business community. University of Hawaii researchers regularly generate intellectual property in the form of patents. The University of Hawaii can provide exclusive rights to these patents, licensing them to individual business or consortia for the purpose of generating revenue. In the first instance the forum will start with presentations from UH researchers from the Ubiquitous Wireless Computing research group from the department of Information and Computer Sciences. The presentations will generally be short in order to allow plenty of time for discussion. As well as getting feedback on the potential licensability of existing patents, UH researchers will be looking for input from the business community on what technologies and techniques could be developed for the mutual benefit of both academia and business.

The UH Business IP Forum is lead by Sam Joseph. Sam is the project lead for the Ubiquitous and Wireless Computing project in the Laboratory for Interactive Learning Technologies in the University of Hawaii Department of Information and Computer Sciences. He has brought in over $3,000,000 in industry grants over the last year and now runs a team of 10 researchers developing new IP in the fields of Ubiquitous and Wireless Computing.

Sam’s academic qualifications include a B.Sc. (Hons) in astrophysics from the University of Leicester, UK, a M.Sc. in cognitive science and natural language and a Ph.D. in neural networks from the University of Edinburgh, UK. He was also recipient of the Raymond-Hide prize for Astrophysics and a Toshiba Fellowship.

Sam spent six years in Japan, first working on intelligent agents at the Toshiba Research & Development Center, then freelancing for startup companies, and finally on peer-to-peer systems at the University of Tokyo.

===================================================================================
The Hawaii All-Geek Meetup and Potluck is scheduled for Sunday, April 20, 2008. Bring your family, your friends, and your toys. Bring some food and an appetite for good grinds and great conversation.

What is the Hawaii Geek Meet? Better to ask what it isn’t! Read all about it.

Where and when is it happening? Magic Island, at Ala Moana Beach Park, Picnic Area #40 [Map] from 10 a.m. until… whenever!

Afraid you’re going to be the only {x} person there? Check out some of the groups that are joining us.

Curious about who will be there? Check out the list of participants.

Can you bring something? Want to check out the menu? Take a look at the potluck page.

Have questions about how all this will come to pass? We do too! Check out the questions page.

Please RSVP A.S.A.P. by simply replying and letting me know if you can make it. Also, if you can provide a canopy tent, table, or large cooler, that would be great, as well.

Manoa Geeks makes up the majority of this event, so I hope you can make it. If you have already registered with someone else, that’s fine, and if you want to pass the word on to someone that may have been over-looked, please feel free.

Thanks, and have a great weekend!
